Latin for Home Schoolers

For the first two years of Latin (equivalent to about 1 year of Latin taught in a traditional high school) the curriculum is the first half of Lingua Latīna, by Hans Oerberg. Lingua Latina is an enjoyable novel about a Roman family living during the height of the Roman Empire. Pictures in the margins give clues and insights into meaning. The book is written entirely in Latin and includes grammar and vocabulary sections (also in Latin). It is designed to promote direct comprehension of Latin without technical translation into English. In addition an interactive Lingua Latīna CD is a vital part of the student’s home study program.

When: Sept-May, 2011,12
Where: Cottonwood, Parker
What: Fundamentals of Geometry Course
Cost: flexible, $30-50 per month

Fundamentals of Geometry

I will be teaching a geometry course primarily using Patty Paper Geometry, by Michael Serra. Patty Paper Geometry (PPG) (which costs $10) is thoroughly hands-on with lots of interaction among students and teacher. This is a one-credit high school course for students who are not seeking the traditional rigorous college prep Geometry course. OR, this is an excellent challenging enrichment course for middle schoolers. The learning style of PPG is inductive rather than the traditional deductive approach with its stepwise proofs. This approach lays a strong conceptual understanding and develops an intuitive grasp of geometry. Since this type of class requires active participation and cooperation, it is important that the students have positive and teachable attitud...

The goal of the workshop is to present a multitude of hands-on activities and strategies for teaching children elementary math concepts. We cover the basic concepts of five areas of grade school math – whole numbers, fra...
